Trailer Analysis

THE HEARTBREAK KID

Genre
– Romantic Comedy
Narrative - A newlywed man who believes he's just gotten hitched to the perfect woman encounters another lady on his honeymoon.
Unique Selling Point - The film is not the typical romantic comedy, as all does not work out as well in the end as it usually does with this genre of film.
Target Audience - 15, the film contains mild sexual references and bad language.
Music - The music up until the couple get married is very slow paced and loving. When we realise that the man is not in love with the woman the music becomes fast paced to hilight his irritation with her.
Camera Types - Mainly medium close ups as to show the characters facial expression and body language, as due to this being a comedy the actors expressions are humorous and add to the comical side of the film. There is also walking space as we cross over fastly from scene to scene.
Dialogue - We see scenes and convosations with both women, this way we can compare what he is like with both of them and the difference between the relationship. We also see conversations with him and his friend, to discuss how unhappy he is with his wife.
Voiceover - The voiceover explains to us what is going on as we see clips of it happening. For example 'The guy who could never commit' as we see him at a wedding at the singles table.
Credits and intertitles - The only character from this film that is mentioned by name is Ben Stiller. I feel this is because he is the most famous and well known, especially for comedy films. After his name is mentioned 'The Heartbreak Kid' comes up in bold letters.

THE PROPOSAL

Genre – Romantic Comedy
Narrative - A publishing executive forces her assistant to marry her so she can avoid deportation back to Canada.
Unique Selling Point - The film does not involve two people who are in love, but two people who claim to be.
Target Audience - 12
Music - The music is very very faced paced and happy, as we only see a few seconds of each comical scene. This also helps to build the mood.
Camera Types - Many different types of camera angles are included in this trailer. We see a lot of different facial expressions and body language using close and extreme close ups. But we also have walking space and shots from far in the distance so show scenes in which the scenery is important.
Dialogue - There are many different characters in this trailer, as we see many different clips. We get to hear each individually speak to another.
Voiceover - The voiceover on this trailer is quite typical in the way that it is only heard at the beginning and end of the trailer. It is quite humourous at the beginning as it gives us a clue to the storyline.
Credits and intertitles - At the end the names of the characters Sanda Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are spoken and their names come up in eye-catching colours. These are again so that people are more likely to go and see the film when the actors are well known.

Film Trailers and Conventions

After looking at and studying many different film trailers, it has become apparent that they are very similar and have many of the same conventions. They are all unique in some ways, with their own selling point. Romantic comedies are particularly stereotypical in the ways in which they are presented. They are very bouncy and happy, letting the audience know the type of film they they will be watching. The music used is very effective and stereotypical, with fast paced, bouncy tunes being used. This makes it immediatly obvious that the film will be a feel good movie and that it will leave the audience smiling and in a good mood.
As well as the audio, the visual part plays a large part aswell. This is very similar to the sound that is used, in the way that it is fast paced. There is a lot of cross-cutting used as they tend to flick very quickly from scene to scene. They also tend to show many different types of scenes from the film. In particular, they pay attention to the biggest and well known celebrities. This is because if you know of the person and they are well known and respected, then you will be more intrigued and want to therefore see the film.

Myself and Jade Payne have decided to create a trailer for a romantic comedy film. We have come up with a plot which we will then summerise and pick scenes from in order to create our trailer. We initially decided to film a music video, but we then decided against this as we faced a few difficulties such as getting authorisation of a soundtrack we could use.
The story is about a love triangle with the characters being a husband, wife and a honeytrap. The story begins with a wife and husband who appear to be happily married and in love. However, we then realise that the wife is suspicious that her husband is having an affair, and therefore hires a honeytrap to try and catch him out. This results in the husband who although is not cheating on his wife, falls in love with the honeytrap.
This movie will have hilarious consequences that will apply to a wide variety of people. This is also why we chose to do a romantic comedy, as we believe that it will apply to a broad audience. The film will be suitable for people off all ages and both genders, as we dont want to make it too stereotypical. I also think that this film is appealing and unique because i don't think romantic comedies are usually based on cheating.
